Russell M. Aoki: Coordinating Discovery Attorney

In 2011, the Administrative Office of the U.S. District Court, Defender Services Office contracted with Mr. Aoki to be its first National Coordinating Discovery Attorney (CDA), to assist the over 12,000 court-appointed Criminal Justice Act (CJA) attorneys and federal defender lawyers develop strategies to manage and review large volumes of electronic discovery for major criminal cases prosecuted in the U.S. District Courts across the country. He has been appointed as a CDA by federal court judges on over 100 cases in 27 jurisdictions.

He also sits on the Administrative Office of U.S. Courts, Defender Services Office Litigation Support Expert Panel, which addresses national technology policies. He is a frequent speaker on strategies to manage and review cases with voluminous discovery for federal district court judges, CJA lawyers, and assistant federal public defenders. He has testified before the Committee to Review the Criminal Justice Act Program, and he is referenced in its 2017 Report of the Ad Hoc Committee to Review the Criminal Justice Act, at 231-33 (Nov. 9, 2017). He has also testified before the Administrative Office of U.S. Court’s Mini-Conference on Criminal Rule 16, (Feb. 7, 2017),
